Headshot photographer Sydney based studio owner Dan Cantero explains why your headshot photo could be the most powerfull tool in your arsenal when it comes to landing new customers or getting that next job.
Why do you need a headshot?
When you’re looking for a job, the first impression you make is key. And your headshot photo is one of the most important factors in making that good impression. A recent study showed that over 75% of employers said they would reject a candidate if they didn’t have a professional headshot on their resume. You want people to click on your photo and have a high CTR (Click Thorough Rate).
What is a good headshot?
So what makes a good headshot photo? In this blog post, we will discuss the do’s and don’ts of headshot photography, and how to make sure you look your best!
A good headshot photo starts with preparation. When you’re taking a headshot, it’s important to be well-groomed and wear clothes that are clean and pressed. Avoid wearing anything with wrinkles or stains. It’s also important not to wear any jewelry or accessories that might distract from your face. You want people looking at YOU, not the necklace around your accessories.
I want to take my own headshot photo
One of the misconceptions that people have is that using flash is a good way to get a good headshot. This could not be further from the truth. Flash lighting is hard and harsh and will result in nasty shadows and a light that is overall not flattering. Instead, opt for window lighting which tends to be much softer. If there is direct sunlight, diffuse the light using something veil curtains or a white translucent material such as a shower curtain.
When it comes to your expression, you want to look relaxed and natural. A forced smile will come across as fake and people will be able to tell that you’re not being genuine. Instead, try to relax your face and let your personality show through in the photo.
Posing for a headshot can be tricky, if you can, get a friend to help you take the photo. This way the only thing you need to worry about is your expression, and your friend will be able to give you feedback to make sure you look your best.
Once you’ve taken the photo, it’s important to make sure that everything looks good. Look at your headshot on a larger screen and zoom in so that you can see any flaws or mistakes that may have happened when taking the photo. If there are any issues with the lighting or exposure, try adjusting those settings first before retaking the photo.
